According to the British intelligence, Russian authorities are bringing back one of the Soviet Union’s organization.

SMERSH which was an umbrella organization for three independent counter-intelligence agencies in the Red Army formed in late 1942 or even earlier, and officially announced on 14 April 1943.

The name SMERSH was coined by the former Soviet Leader, Joseph Stalin.

The formal justification for its creation was to subvert the attempts by Nazi German forces to infiltrate the Red Army on the Eastern Front.

The British intelligence reported on the X that Russian politicians have revived the counterintelligence service SMERSH, whose initials stand for, “Death to Spies”.

In 1941, Joseph Stalin assigned SMERSH to hunt down spies and besiege dissidents from the communist regime.

Shortly after World War II, the organization was disbanded in 1946, and today the Russian Ministry of Defense announced its resurrection.

The new SMERSH unit became famous in the West thanks to the image reflected in Jan Fleming’s James Bond stories, such as “All Love from Russia,” and then through cinematographic novels.

The British Ministry of Defense indicated that it wasn’t clear whether it was the same old SMERCH, and its members had been trained and rehabilitated again, or if it was the name of a newly named intelligence unit.

The SMERCH unit was historically created to combat Nazi infiltration into the Red Army during World War II, as well as to defeat dissidents and uprisings in the territories controlled by the Soviet Union in Germany and Eastern Europe.

SMERSH was known for eliminating people who were classified, truthfully or unjustly, as “traitors” regarding the Russian issue.

The tasks of the SMERCH ranged from pursuing and executing German spies within the Red Army, ascertaining the importance of German documents that fell into the hands of the Soviets, monitoring the movements of their agents and how they accomplished their tasks, in addition to getting rid of failed military leaders.

SMERSH monitored the effectiveness of the Red Army’s equipment and increased discipline among the soldiers, and also entrusted with the task of confronting defections in the ranks of the army and punishing deserters and those who failed to do so.

On the other hand, SMERCH members monitored economic activities with the aim of confronting black market and monopoly operations.

They were also entrusted with the task of verifying the loyalty of soldiers and arresting opponents of the Stalinist regime within the Red Army.
