Biden: We went through a difficult day in the Middle East and we will respond after the killing of three US soldiers in a drone attack on a base in Jordan
US President Joe Biden confirmed that his country had a difficult day in the Middle East last night (Sunday) because its forces were attacked on the Syrian-Jordanian border, pledging to respond.
In statements to reporters during a visit to South Carolina, Biden said, “We went through a difficult day in the Middle East last night”.
He explained that his country lost 3 brave lives as a result of the attack, adding, “We’ll respond”.
Hours ago, the US President confirmed that 3 US soldiers were killed and others were wounded in a drone attack on US forces stationed in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria.
Biden said, in a statement published by the White House on its website, that he holds armed groups active in Syria and Iraq supported by Iran responsible for the attack on the US base in northeastern Jordan.
The US President added, “The heart of the United States is heavy with sadness… Today, 3 members of the US military were killed and many were wounded during an air attack by a drone on our forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border”.
He added, “While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know that it was carried out by Iranian-backed extremist armed groups operating in Syria and Iraq”.
Biden vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the attack on the US base at the time and in the manner we choose.
The US President described the attack as “despicable and unfair”.
In turn, the US Central Command announced, in a statement, that 3 US soldiers were killed and 25 others were wounded in a drone attack that struck a base in northeastern Jordan near the border with Syria.
CNN network said that the dead Americans were in “Tower 22” in Jordan near the border with Syria, and their killing represents a major escalation of the situation in the Middle East.
The recent attack on US forces in Jordan is the first of its kind since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza, and the first to result in American deaths.
Jordan, for its part, denied that the attacks on US forces occurred within its territory.
