Ahmed al Sharaa returns to Syria after a historic visit to the United States
Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa returned to Syria on Tuesday after a historic visit to Washington, during which he met with US President Donald Trump.
The Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani posted a photo on his Instagram account of him with Sharaa, saying, “We came back after a week of achievements that pave the way for the renaissance of Syria and the well-being and pride of its people”.
Sharaa and Shaibani’s return to Syria comes after a week-long foreign tour that included Brazil and the United States.
Bith arrived in Brazil on November 6 to participate in the United Nations climate conference “COP30”.
On the sidelines of Brazil’s visit, which lasted until November 8, Sharaa met with a number of international officials, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga.
In addition to the presidents of France, Emmanuel Macron and Finland Alexander Staub, the prime ministers of Britain Keir Starmer, Spain Pedro Sanchez, and Dick Schöve of the Netherlands, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz.
In Washington, where he arrived at dawn on Sunday, Sharaa met with President Donald Trump, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, House Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Brian Mast, members of the American Chamber of Commerce and representatives of the Syrian community.
Sharaa said in statements to the Washington Post, that the US administration agrees that Syria deserves to have a chance to stabilize, build its economy and preserve its territorial integrity.
In a related context, the United States announced, following al Sharaa’s visit to Washington, the suspension of a set of sanctions imposed on the United States.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani also announced the return of the Syrian diplomatic mission staff to work at the Syrian embassy in Washington, and the reopening of a number of Syrian honorary consulates in a number of US states, after the US State Department approved the resumption of work of Syrian diplomatic missions in the United States.
