Mexico sends two ships loaded with humanitarian aid to Cuba
Mexico has sent two ships loaded with humanitarian aid to Cuba, Mexico’s foreign ministry said on Sunday, as the communist island comes under intense US pressure following the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The 814-ton aid shipment comes as Mexico considers a way to send oil to Cuba without facing punitive measures from US President Donald Trump, who has said he will impose tariff sanctions on any country that supplies Cuba’s oil.
Mexico Foreign Ministry said two Navy ships carrying supplies to Cuba left on Sunday and were expected to arrive on the island in four days.
The aid includes fresh and powdered milk, meat, cereals, rice and hygiene items, she said, adding that another 1,500 tons of food aid are waiting to be shipped.
Cuba’s already battered economy is suffering from the interruption of oil supplies from Venezuela after the January 3rd US attack on Caracas, during which Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, were arrested and transferred to the United States to stand trial on drug-related charges.
