In an early visit… Netanyahu meets Trump in Washington on Wednesday to discuss negotiations with Iran
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office reported on Saturday evening that Netanyahu will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington next Wednesday to discuss negotiations with Iran.
“Any negotiations should include limiting ballistic missiles and stopping support for Iran’s proxies,” Netanyahu’s office added.
For his part, a White House official said that Netanyahu has asked to bring forward the date of his visit to the White House a week later than previously planned, and to meet with the US president next Wednesday.
This comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, in light of repeated warnings from President Trump of the possibility of a military strike.
A round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran took place in Oman on Friday, the first of its kind since Israeli-American strikes on Iran last June.
Washington wants Tehran to stop uranium enrichment, curb its ballistic missile program, and end its support for regional proxies, while Iran has said its willing to discuss only its nuclear file, without mentioning its missile arsenal.
According to Israeli media, Netanyahu’s early visit, which was scheduled two weeks later, reflects the extent of concern in Israel about the acceleration of possible international understandings with Iran, which Israel fears will come incomplete and do not meet its existential security needs.
Israel’s political and security cabinet is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting on Sunday to outline the outlines that Netanyahu will present to Trump, in an effort to ensure that positions are fully coordinated between the two allies before any serious round of negotiations with Tehran begins.
