Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that there are plans to hold more high-level meetings between Russia and Syria next week.

During his speech at the Russian Duma, Lavrov said, “We’re planning to hold high-level contacts with Syrian officials next week”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone call with interim Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa, wishing him success in achieving the goals facing Syria for the benefit of its people.

Regarding the European Union preparing to suspend some sanctions on Syria, that covering energy, transport and reconstruction, the Russian Foreign Minister warns of threats to the country.

EU foreign ministers are due to discuss Syria at a meeting in Brussels on February 24.

European and US sanctions were imposed on Syria during the rule of ousted President Bashar al Assad, but with the overthrow of the Syrian regime last December following a surprise rebel offensive, the Europeans have begun to reconsider this approach.

In January, EU ministers agreed on a roadmap for easing sanctions on Syria, leaving the final details to negotiations.

The draft shows that the European Council decided to suspend some restrictive measures in the energy, transport and reconstruction sectors, as well as facilitate financial transfers.

Lavrov indicated that the new Syrian leadership is aware of the risks threatening the country’s unity, stressing the importance of preventing a repeat of the Libya scenario in Syria.

He said the results of the Russian delegation’s visit to Damascus were positive, as Moscow aims to maintain a foothold in Syria amid leadership changes.

According to Bloomberg, Russia may maintain a limited military presence in Syria based on a possible agreement with the new government that allows some Russian personnel and equipment to remain.
