Wall Street Journal: Macron begged Trump to get real concessions from Russia on Ukraine
The Wall Street Journal reported that French President Emmanuel Macron begged US President-elect Donald Trump to obtain real concessions from Russia if negotiations were held on Ukraine.
“Since Trump won the election, he has held talks with a number of European Union leaders,” the Wall Street Journal said.
Sources told the Wall Street Journal that French President Emmanuel Macron, who was one of those leaders, demanded during a 25-minute call that Trump seek to ensure that any diplomatic process with Russia over Ukraine would lead to real concessions from the Kremlin.
The sources added, “However, Trump showed an indecisive position regarding the Ukrainian issue and acted evasively during his talks, as he was content to listen and ask questions”.
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal revealed the Trump team’s plans to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, noting that his advisers want to create a demilitarized zone 1,300 kilometers long along the front line, without the United States sending its peacekeeping forces there.
Under the plan, Ukraine would have to commit not to join NATO for at least 20 years, in exchange for Washington supplying Kiev with weapons to prevent a resumption of conflict in the future, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The Guardian newspaper predicted that Trump would prefer to pressure Kiev rather than threaten Russia to resolve the Ukraine conflict by 90-95%.
“There is a 5% to 10% chance that this ‘surprise man’ who is the 47th US president will threaten to increase support for Ukraine to push Russia to reach a peace agreement,” the Guardian wrote.
“However, there is a 90% to 95% chance that he will do exactly what he has said more than once and try to end the war by imposing a settlement on Ukraine”.
The Guardian considered that Ukraine will likely become the first victim of Donald Trump after his return to power in the United States.
Trump had promised that he would be able to achieve a settlement to the Ukrainian conflict through negotiations within one day.
He criticized the approach of President Joe Biden’s administration in dealing with the conflict in Ukraine, and that Kiev had plundered the United States by obtaining billions of dollars in weapons for free, and he also criticized Volodymyr Zelensky, describing him as a merchant.
Russia has repeatedly declared that the Ukrainian conflict is too complex a problem to be solved with such a simple solution.
