The Times of Israel: What will be next for the fractured relationship between Netanyahu and Gallant?
The Times of Israel newspaper analyzes the fractured relationship between the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his minister of defense Yoav Gallant.
The Times of Israel said that since the beginning of this year, Netanyahu has tried to dismiss Gallant because of his position on judicial reform, but he failed.
What indicates a bad relationship between them?
Official Israeli sources indicated that Netanyahu prevented Defense Minister Gallant from discussing the hostage issue with Mossad chief David Barnea individually.
The source added a comment to Netanyahu, The War Cabinet is the body that sets policy and decides on the issue of hostages and missing persons.
According to Channel 12 News, Netanyahu cannot prevent Gallant from meeting with senior military and security officials, however, he prevented Gallant from including Barnea when he wasn’t present.
Gallant had invited Barnea to attend meetings and received letters from Netanyahu’s office indicating that the latter didn’t agree to them.
The reason for Netanyahu’s anger was that Gallant summoned Barnea immediately after his return from his secret trip to Paris to discuss the hostage release deal before Netanyahu was informed of the details.
However, the Prime Minister’s Office denied that there were any such restrictions on Gallant or Barnea.
The cracks in the relationship between Netanyahu and Gallant are still visible despite claims that they are working in harmony.
Reports indicate that Gallant pushed hard to wage war against Hezbollah in Lebanon at the beginning of the war, but Netanyahu thwarted the attempt.
A few weeks ago, Netanyahu and Gallant held a separate press conference, and when Netanyahu was asked about the reason, he said, “I offered Gallant a joint conference, but he decided what he decided”.
While Gallant said, “Sometimes we hold joint conferences and sometimes separately”.
At the beginning of the year, Netanyahu tried to dismiss Gallant from his position after he opposed the government’s decision regarding the judicial reform law, but the dismissal decision was met with very strong opposition from political circles, which forced Netanyahu to backdown from dismissing Gallant.
