Welt: NATO intelligence classified report indicates the newest Russian nuclear Burevestnik system is ready for use
The German Welt newspaper, citing a secret NATO intelligence report, reported that the modernization of Russia’s nuclear weapons arsenal has been completed and the Burevestnik system is ready for use.
NATO intelligence has been monitoring news of the Burevestnik missile (which NATO calls the SSC-X-9 Skyfall) for several years.
Three weeks ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the development of this nuclear winged missile had been successfully completed and would soon enter service.
According to NATO, the Burevestnik missile can fly at speeds of more than 900 km/h, with a range of up to 14,000 km.
Experts also confirm Putin’s statements that the missile is capable of maneuvering for long periods before hitting its target.
During one of his experiments, he stayed in the air for 15 hours.
US experts believe the missile is capable of flying for days, thanks to its nuclear engine.
NATO considers the Burevestnik missile to pose a serious threat to Europe.
Putin has previously stressed that Russia doesn’t threaten anyone by developing its nuclear capabilities.
In another statement, the Russian president said that the Burevestnik missile has unique combat and operational advantages, and it has technology that can be applied in the field of war and science.
“The nuclear propulsion system of this missile can be launched in minutes, with a force comparable to that of a nuclear submarine reactor, but with a thousand times less volume,” he said.
At the end of October, Putin also announced the success of the test of the nuclear-powered submarine Poseidon nuclear torpedo, noting that its destructive capability is much more severe than the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.
