Tom Barrack acknowledges failure to make peace in the region
US Ambassador in Türkiye, Tom Barrack described the issue of peace in the Middle East as a great question that cannot be solved in remarks in which he commented on the possibility of achieving peace in the region.
“It’s a great question that can’t be solved… Abraham couldn’t do that, Ishmael and Isaac couldn’t do that, Moses couldn’t do that, Jesus couldn’t do that, and the Seven Crusades couldn’t do that,” Barrack said.
Referring to current peace efforts, the US ambassador added, “So, to think that you’re going to do it in two years is probably not realistic”.
Barrack’s comment comes in the context of the renewed international debate about the future of the Middle East peace process, especially in light of recent regional developments and ongoing tensions.
His unoptimistic remarks are relatively rare from a high-ranking US diplomat, as the United States usually embraces rhetoric that supports the possibility of peace, especially in President Donald Trump’s vision, albeit a far-fetched one.
In his remarks, Ambassador Barrack refers to historical and religious figures and milestones central to the region’s heritage, reflecting the depth and depth of the divisions that any contemporary peace process must address.
The importance of his remarks lies in their timing, as multi-level talks are taking place on a number of thorny regional issues, the most important of which is the Palestinian issue.
