The Wall Street Journal: Trump plans to tighten sanctions on Russia this week
The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will decide this week to increase sanctions on Russia.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed officials, reported that Trump plans to increase sanctions on Moscow following Russian attacks on Ukraine in recent days.
Officials indicated that the sanctions may be aimed at pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin at the negotiating table and pushing him to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.
Officials added that Trump is fed up with peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and that the United States is considering withdrawing from the negotiations altogether if the last-ditch effort fails.
Officials noted that Trump doesn’t believe the additional sanctions will restrict Russia’s ability to fight, but he believes they will hinder efforts to revitalize economic relations between the two countries.
Officials also explained that Trump’s views changed last week after Putin refused to sign the ceasefire.
Last Sunday, US President Donald Trump said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had “lost his mind, and become crazy” and accused him of killing many people unnecessarily following Russia’s recent attack on Ukraine.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Putin’s actions following Russia’s recent military attack on Ukraine, despite a prisoner exchange between the two sides under the Istanbul Agreement.
