Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa received US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack, Wednesday at the People’s Palace in Damascus.
Barrack’s visit was the first official visit of its kind since the formation of the new government and the lifting of US sanctions on Syria.
This visit marks a significant milestone in relations between Washington and Damascus, opening the door to a new phase of dialogue and cooperation after long years of estrangement and political tension.
Washington is preparing to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
During the visit, Thomas Barrack announced that US President Donald Trump intends to soon remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, stressing that the US administration is working to support and empower the current Syrian government within the framework of a new vision for regional stability.
This came during Barrack’s meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani, where they discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries and facilitate reconstruction efforts.
He stated that the US military has successfully accomplished 99% of its mission in fighting ISIS inside Syria, noting that the US Congress continues to support the Trump administration’s efforts toward a comprehensive political settlement.

He emphasized that dialogue is the beginning, expressing Washington’s aspiration to achieve comprehensive peace in the region, including an agreement between Syria and Israel as part of a new US strategy focused on reducing tensions and enhancing regional security.
These statements come at a time when the Syrian issue is witnessing major transformations at the international and regional levels, amid accelerating diplomatic rapprochement and moves aimed at reintegrating Syria into the international arena after years of isolation.
During his visit to the Syrian capital, Thomas Barrack attended the rising of the US flag ceremony, which was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister.
