A senior US official, reported on Sunday that President Donald Trump’s administration has sent messages to Iran through diplomatic channels, expressing its openness to holding a meeting and opening negotiations on an agreement between the two sides.

The Israeli Channel 12 quoted the US official, whom it described as familiar with the details, as saying that the Trump administration has conveyed messages to Iran through several channels that its open to holding a meeting to negotiate an agreement between the two countries.

The Israeli channel also quoted US officials as saying that “Türkiye, Egypt and Qatar are working to arrange a meeting in Ankara in the coming days to bring together White House envoy Steve Witkoff with Iranian officials, as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing the situation from sliding into a broad military confrontation in the region”.

The US officials noted that they don’t know whether Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will authorize his team to reach an agreement.

In the same context, US officials pointed out, according to the Israeli channel, that the Trump administration hasn’t yet made a final decision on a military strike on Iran, despite the strengthening of the US military presence in the Gulf region, stressing that the diplomatic option is still on the table.

On the other hand, Khamenei continued his hardline rhetoric, warning that any US attack would lead to a regional war, without touching on the possibility of entering into direct negotiations.

Earlier on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed confidence that an agreement could be reached between his country and the United States on Tehran’s nuclear program.

In an interview with CNN, Araghchi added that Tehran, in cooperation with the countries of the region, is trying to find a path to resume negotiations with Washington.

He pointed out that Trump stressed the need for no nuclear weapons, noting that Iran fully agrees with him in this regard.

On Saturday, Trump said Washington was in talks with Tehran, but spoke in a pessimistic tone about the possibility of a positive outcome from the talks.

Iran considers that the United States seeks through sanctions, pressure, and provoking unrest to provide a pretext for foreign intervention in order to bring about regime change in the country, and vows a comprehensive and unprecedented response to any attack targeting it, even if its limited.
