The UK based; Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed on Wednesday that 1,383 civilians were killed as a result of the violence witnessed in the coastal region of western Syria.

The Observatory reported that at least 1,383 civilians, the vast majority of them Alawites, have been killed in the violence that has swept across the Sahel region in western Syria since March 6.

According to the report, these people were killed in executions by security forces and their affiliated groups, as these operations were concentrated on March 7 and 8, noting that the death toll continues to rise because documenting the number of deaths is still ongoing.

In this regard, Syrian transitional President Ahmad al Sharaa said the mass killings of members of the Alawite sect posed a threat to his mission to unify the country, and vowed to punish those responsible, including his allies if necessary.

He added, “Syria is a state of law… The law will take its course for everyone… We fought to defend the oppressed, and we won’t accept any blood being shed unjustly or going unpunished or unaccountable, even if it belongs to those closest to us”.

On Tuesday, the fact-finding committee investigating the violence in the Syrian coastal region pledged to pursue and punish the perpetrators, while affirming that it would submit its findings to the presidency within a month.
