Peru’s parliament voted Tuesday in an emergency session to impeach acting President José Jerí, who has been targeted in two investigations on suspicion of abuse of power, weeks before the April 12th presidential election.

Jerí is the seventh president to be impeached in a decade, and the parliament voted in favor by a majority of 75 votes, while 24 members voted against impeachment and three abstained.

José Jerí served as President of Parliament until October, succeeding Dina Boluarte.

Parliament on Wednesday will elect a new speaker who will automatically become acting president until July 28th, when the president will be inaugurated in April.

The 39-year-old is under investigation, one on suspicion of interfering in the recruitment of nine women in his government and the second on suspicion of crimes related to abuse of power.
