A YouGov poll showed that more than half of Germany’s population could imagine emigrating abroad.

In response to the question, “Assuming you have complete independence professionally, personally, and financially: Could you imagine leaving Germany and emigrating abroad?”

The result came with 31% of participants answered “yes, definitely” and 27% answered “maybe”.

In contrast, 22% said they would probably not emigrate and 15% said they would definitely not emigrate.

The survey indicated that the percentage of those willing to emigrate is particularly high among voters of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany party (AfD): 55% of them said they would definitely emigrate, and 24% said they would probably emigrate.

Among those who could envision emigrating abroad, 36% have increasingly considered leaving Germany in recent months.

The survey revealed that, of these 36%, 61% cited Germany’s immigration situation as a reason, and 41% pointed to the recession in Germany, and 29% to the rise of the Alternative for Germany party.

The military threat from Russia was among the reasons cited by 22% of respondents, as was the potential loss of the United States as a protector of Europe as a result of Donald Trump’s presidency (12%); Thirty-six% also cited other reasons.

The two German-speaking countries, Switzerland and Austria (30% for the former and 23% for the latter), are the main choices for those wishing to immigrate, followed by Spain and Canada (22% for the former and 17% for the latter).
