The Israeli Jerusalem Post newspaper revealed that Benjamin Netanyahu, received a sudden shock during his recent visit to Washington, when US President Donald Trump informed him that the United States and Iran were about to begin talks on a new nuclear agreement, without Israel’s involvement.

The Jerusalem Post noted that Trump, who had barely bragged about world leaders lining up to “kiss my hand” in an effort to reach an agreement on tariffs, hopped on a plane from Budapest to Washington, becoming the first to announce that “Israel has lifted all tariffs on American imports”.

The Israeli newspaper stated that Netanyahu, who rushed to Washington after Trump’s tariff announcements, “expected to discuss a joint strategy against Iran, but was surprised to learn of potential US-Iranian talks”.

The Israeli newspaper also explained that instead of removing tariffs on Israel and holding a strategy session in the Oval Office to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The Israeli prime minister, received what it described as a “sudden and painful blow”.

He was summoned to inform him that the United States and Iran were about to begin talks on a nuclear agreement without him.

The Jerusalem Post considered that the US-Iranian talks were not the only bad news for “Bibi” noting that Netanyahu also learned that Trump was preparing to sign a nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia that wouldn’t require normalization of relations with Israel.

This constitutes a retreat from Netanyahu’s priority of linking any Saudi-US agreement to normalization.

The Jerusalem Post noted that, in previous talks with the Biden administration, Saudi Arabia had linked the development of its civilian nuclear program to obtaining US security guarantees and diplomatic relations with Israel.

However, this position collapsed after October 7, when Riyadh added new demands unacceptable to Netanyahu, most notably the establishment of a Palestinian state.

According to the Israeli newspaper, Trump is expected to announce the nuclear agreement next month during his visit to Saudi Arabia, his first foreign trip of his second term (as he did during his first).

He may also stop in Israel on his way back, but this hasn’t yet been announced.
