Elon Musk announces his departure from Trump administration
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Wednesday the end of his tenure with US President Donald Trump’s administration.
Musk had previously led the Commission on Government Efficiency, an agency created to reduce spending in the US government.
In a post on his X platform, Musk expressed his gratitude to Trump, saying, “As my limited term as a special government employee comes to an end, I thank President Trump for the opportunity to contribute to efforts to reduce unnecessary spending”.
Musk added that the idea of the “Government Efficiency Commission” will continue and evolve to become a model for various US government agencies.
In statements, Musk expressed his displeasure with a new spending bill proposed by the Trump administration, asserting that it would increase the federal government’s fiscal deficit and undo the agency’s efforts to reduce staffing and government spending.
Musk, who later preferred to focus on his projects at Tesla and SpaceX, indicated that the agency had become a scapegoat due to the strained relations between it and the administration, especially after the layoff of tens of thousands of employees as part of the financial reform plan.
In an interview with CBS News, Musk explained that he was very disappointed by the passage of the bill, which he described as “massive spending that increases the deficit and undermines the achievements of the government’s efficiency team”.
According to observers, the bill, which passed the House of Representatives and is awaiting debate in the Senate, includes massive tax breaks and spending cuts.
However, critics warn that it could increase the US national deficit by up to $4 trillion over the next decade, in addition to potentially cutting healthcare programs.
Although the White House denied any direct disagreement between Trump and Musk over spending management, it didn’t mention Musk by name, implicitly indicating the sensitivity surrounding the issue.
