Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Sunday called on the United States to “stop its threats against a historically” after President Donald Trump reiterated the need for the Greenland region of Copenhagen.

“I must say to the United States clearly: Its completely unacceptable to say that the United States should control Greenland,” Frederiksen said in a statement.

The prime minister recalled that the Kingdom of Denmark, which includes the Faroe Islands and Greenland, is a member of NATO and therefore benefits from the alliance’s security guarantee.

That came shortly after Trump renewed his country’s need for the autonomous region, and Katie Miller, the wife of White House chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted a map of Greenland in the colors of the American flag on X on Saturday with the word “soon” in capital letters, reinforcing concerns about Greenland, which is of interest to Trump given its strategic location and the fact that it contains huge mining resources.

Tensions between Washington and Copenhagen escalated after Trump announced in late December the appointment of a special envoy for the vast territory.

The US president said in press remarks on Sunday: “We definitely need Greenland… We need it for security”.

Commenting on Miller’s post, Greenland Prime Minister Jens Fredrik Nielsen said on Facebook: “This image is insulting. Relations between states and peoples are based on respect and international law, not on symbols that ignore our status and rights”.

But he stressed that there is no need to panic or worry, stressing that Greenland “isn’t for sale, and its future isn’t decided on social media”.

Denmark’s ambassador in the United States, Jesper Müller Sorensen, has previously expressed a similar position.

“A friendly reminder about the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark: We’re close allies, and we must continue to work together on that basis,” he wrote in response to Miller.

“Yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” he added.

Miller was an adviser and spokesperson for the Government Efficiency Committee when it was chaired by Elon Musk, before working for the billionaire in the private sector.

Miller’s post on X came after US forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife during a military operation in Caracas.

Experts said the operation is likely to re-raise concerns about territory that Trump wants to seize strategic resources, including Greenland, which he has expressed interest in annexing.
