Axios: Trump warned Netanyahu against any action that would threaten negotiations with Tehran
A White House official revealed that US President Donald Trump warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call last week against taking any action that might jeopardize negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding a new nuclear agreement, according to Axios website.
The official said that Trump and other senior US officials have become concerned in recent weeks about the possibility that Israel might bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities or take other steps that could undermine the talks.
The US official added that Trump’s message was that he “didn’t want Netanyahu to inflame tensions at a time when he was trying to solve problems”.
Trump assured Netanyahu in a phone call after the killing of Israeli embassy employees in Washington that another option was still on the table, but he first wanted to see if a diplomatic solution could be reached.
Some US officials have also expressed concern that Netanyahu might order an attack even without a green light from Trump.
US Homeland Security Secretary Kirsty Noam met with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Sunday and also conveyed Trump’s message to him about the need to avoid any steps that could undermine the negotiations, according to an Israeli official.
Noam told Fox News on Monday that she had a frank and direct conversation with Netanyahu about the need to unite and let the process run its course.
She added that Trump wouldn’t prolong negotiations with Iran for weeks or months, but would make a decision within days… The Israeli official explained that Noam told Netanyahu, “Give us a week”.
Israel was preparing to launch swift strikes against Iranian nuclear sites if nuclear talks between the United States and Iran collapsed in the coming weeks.
The Iranian and US delegations concluded the fifth round of talks in Rome last week, with indications of some limited progress.
Trump said on Sunday that the talks were showing real progress and that he might have good news about them later this week.
