Denmark announced on Friday its intention to reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus this year, after a 14-year closure since 2012.

This decision comes within the framework of a diplomatic shift towards Syria.

Official announcement with the participation of Danish leaders Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated during a joint press conference in Copenhagen in the presence of: Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Defense Secretary Truels Lund Paulsen, Minister of Immigration and Integration Rasmus Stocklund.

Rasmussen explained that the return of the Danish embassy to Damascus will allow Denmark to follow developments in Syria better and more positively, strengthening cooperation with the Syrian authorities in the repatriation of migrants, and promoting direct diplomatic dialogue with Damascus, and most importantly coordinate the return of Syrian refugees, especially those who are classified as criminals.

The Danish Foreign Minister met with his Syrian counterpart Asaad al Shaibani in Damascus in November 2025, as part of preparations to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Danish move comes in the context of broader diplomatic shifts in relations between European countries and Syria, as several European capitals seek to rebuild bridges of communication with Damascus after years of tension and disconnect following events in Syria since 2011.
