Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are seeking to conclude a series of commercial transactions to strengthen relations between their countries, away from France.

Meloni’s first visit to Berlin on Wednesday, during which she was accompanied by senior government ministers, represents the highest-level meeting between the two countries in seven years.

The German Chancellor welcomed his guest, describing her as dear Giorgia, as the series of financial victories achieved by Rome coincided with the budget disaster that Berlin is suffering from.

This warmth reflects a series of moves by the Meloni government in recent weeks to facilitate cooperation relations between foreign companies, including cooperation with Germany and at the expense of France.

Manifestations of this cooperation ranged from aerospace to airlines and telecommunications.

Berlin played a key role in Rome’s decision to veto the acquisition of a local airline by Safran SA, a French multinational that makes aircraft and missile engines.

The document revealed that during consultations with Rome, German officials warned that the purchase of Microtechnica, a major Italian company for aircraft components, could represent an obstacle to the main supply lines.
