German Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger will travel to Taiwan next Monday.

The German Federal Ministry of Education announced, on Friday, in Berlin Bettina Stark-Watzinger, who is a member at the Free Democratic Party will visit the Democratic Island of Taiwan for two days and meet with government representatives in the fields of research, education, science and business in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.

Against the backdrop of tensions between China and Taiwan, this trip is symbolic.

The Chinese Embassy in Berlin reacted angrily on the German official visit to Taiwan news.

Visits by members of the German parliament recently aroused discontent between Beijing and Berlin.

According to the German government, Federal Economics Minister Günther Rexroth was the last German minister to visit Taiwan in 1997.
