In an interview between Bundestag member, and the co-chairwoman of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, and the Financial Times newspaper, Weidel stated that she supports the idea of a referendum on Germany’s membership in the European Union, based on the experience of Britain and was considering its exit a good step.

Weidel, and her party is seen as a peripheral branch that doesn’t enjoy much support in German politics, but Weidel is emerging strongly thanks to the growing support for her party, which achieved 22% in the latest opinion polls.

In the same context, Weidel stressed the importance of appreciating the opposition government, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union, which may agree in the future to form a coalition with the Alternative for Germany party, and despite their current refusal to cooperate with the Alternative, this development may occur constructively on future conditions.

Ultimately, Weidel’s proposal for Germany’s exit from the European Union remains merely provocative political rhetoric, as actual withdrawal is not possible due to its close economic and political connection to the European Union, which is vital for Germany in current scenarios.
