Russian Defense Minister in his first public appearance since Wagner rebellion: Visiting the Army command in Donbas

On Monday, the Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu, visited the Russian forces participating in the military operation in Ukraine, in his first public appearance, since the Wagner rebellion.

The Russian Ministry of Defense, indicated that Shoigu is still in his position, but didn’t mention any details about the date and place of the Minister of Defense’s meeting with the forces and leaders of the Western Military District.

The announcement of Shoigu’s visit to the Russian forces comes after questions and questions raised about his disappearance and Army Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, from the entire scene during and after Wagner rebellion, especially since the rebellion was mainly targeting them.

The leader of Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is one of Shoigu’s biggest critics, had demanded in his rebellion that took place on Saturday, that Shoigu and Gerasimov be extradited.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked about possible changes in positions at the Defense Ministry, following negotiations that led to an agreement under which the Wagner Group would end its insurgency.

Peskov said, “These matters fall within the powers limited only to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who is Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation… Hence it’s unlikely that these topics were discussed in the context of the aforementioned communications”.
