Africa as hunger and shortages loom. Grain shortage and food security, a world in crisis during war between Russia and Ukraine

Russian Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev announced that Moscow has completed its initiative to deliver 200,000 tons of grain for free to six countries in Africa, as President Vladimir Putin promised last July.

During a meeting that took place on Wednesday, Patrushev confirmed to Putin that Russia had shipped 50,000 tons to Somalia and the Central African Republic, and 25,000 tons to Mali, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, and Eritrea.

At a summit with African leaders in July, Putin promised to provide assistance by shipping grains free of charge to these countries, in a move that comes after Russia withdrew from a Ukrainian deal that allowed it to ship grains through the Black Sea, which negatively affected global grain prices.

Patrushev indicated that Russia expects to export about 70 million tons of grain in the agricultural year 2023-2024, as its exports in the previous season amounted to 66 million tons, with an estimated value of about $16.5 billion.

With this step, Russia strengthens relations with African countries and enhances international cooperation in the field of humanitarian aid and agricultural trade.
