Niger: The United States will soon present a project arranging the withdrawal of its forces
Niger announced that the United States will soon present a project that would arrange the withdrawal of its forces present in the country, after the Transitional Military Council canceled the cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in 2012.
The Nigerian Ministry of Interior explained in a statement that the US Ambassador to Niamey, Kathleen Fitzgibbon, announced this draft arrangement for withdrawal, during her meeting on Wednesday with the Minister of Interior, General Mohamed Toumba.
The statement added that the withdrawal project “will be discussed between the two parties,” but without specifying a specific date for that.
Washington has more than 1,000 military personnel deployed in Niger, and it also has a large base for drones in Agadez in the north of the country.
The meeting between the US Ambassador and the Nigerien Minister of the Interior came a day after a telephone conversation between the President of Niger, General Abdullah Tiani, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which touched on the issue of enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
Niger announced more than a week ago the cancellation of the military agreement with the American side with immediate effect, considering it illegal and violates all constitutional and democratic rules.
