Türkiye’s presidential candidate from the Homeland Party, Muharrem Ince, said on Tuesday that he will make every effort to hold a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al Assad if he wins the presidential election.

“Of course, I’ll hold a meeting with Assad, Syria, our old neighbor,” Ince said in an interview with Russian Sputnik agency.

“What’s the United States doing there at a distance of 10 thousand kilometers from its borders? We’ll live side by side with the Syrians, and we need to solve our problems through dialogue”.

The Turkish politician added that the negotiations with Syria should be conducted by diplomats, and then the president should conduct them, noting that he will try to arrange the matter until the end.

On December 5, Erdogan confirmed that he had offered Russian President Vladimir Putin a meeting between the leaders of Türkiye, Russia and Syria, preceded by a meeting of the heads of the intelligence, defense and foreign services.

The defense ministers of Russia, Syria and Türkiye held tripartite talks in Moscow late last year to discuss ways to resolve the Syrian crisis, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

These talks are the first official meeting between Ankara and Damascus in 11 years.

After the talks, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that Ankara proposed holding a meeting of the foreign ministers of Türkiye and Syria in the second half of January, possibly in a third country.

Turkish Presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled to be on May 14, and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, put forward by the opposition Six-Party Alliance, is Erdogan’s main opponent, while the list of presidential candidates also includes Muharram Ince of the Homeland Party and Sinan Oğan, who are supported by the National Union Alliance.
