On Wednesday, Israeli Knesset security expelled leftist MP Ofer Cassif from the parliament hall, after he said that the Israeli operation in Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza represented a “war crime”.

Cassif, a representative of the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality, a Jewish-Arab party.

On Monday, the Israeli army announced its withdrawal from the Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City after a two-week military operation, leaving behind massive destruction and dozens of bodies.

The official Israeli Broadcasting Authority said, “Knesset member Ofer Cassif described the Israeli army’s operation in Shifa Medical Complex as a war crime, and he was subsequently expelled from the plenary session”.

Cassif faced an attempt to remove him from the Knesset due to his opposition of the ongoing war in gaza.

Cassif was removed of the Knesset podium while he was speaking, as he was quoting a statement by the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in the wake of the recent Israeli army storming Shifa Medical Complex for the second time.

“Hospitals should never become a battleground; Protecting young children, the sick, medical staff, and all citizens must be a top priority,” Cassif said.

After that, a number of Knesset members from the ruling right-wing coalition approached the podium and interrupted his speech, and demanded that MP Hanoch Milvedisky, who moderated the session, stop him from speaking.

However, Cassif continued his speech, saying, “Before the invasion, thousands of Palestinians, displaced persons, and refugees took refuge in the hospital to escape the horror of war, but the horror of war crimes chased them into the protected gates of the hospital”.

At this moment, shouts arose from many Knesset members who left their seats and arrived at the podium area, before the session president summoned the security guards and asked them to forcefully remove Cassif of the podium and expel him from the hall.

On February 19, the Israeli right failed to remove Cassif for supporting South Africa’s lawsuit before the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of committing genocide crimes in Gaza.

At that time, 85 representatives (out of 120 in the Knesset) supported a proposal submitted by right-wing representatives in the Knesset to dismiss Cassif, but failed to obtain the necessary majority (90 votes) to oust him.
