Israeli army: 4 soldiers killed and 7 others injured in the southern Gaza Strip

The Israeli military said Tuesday that four soldiers were killed Monday in fighting in the southern Gaza Strip, where the war with Hamas has entered its ninth month.

An army statement said the soldiers were “killed during fighting in southern Gaza” on Monday, without giving details about the circumstances of their deaths.

Israel’s Kann public broadcaster reported that soldiers were killed in a booby-trapped building explosion in the southernmost city of Rafah on the border with Egypt, where the army is focusing its operations.

The al Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said on Monday that its fighters killed and wounded several Israeli soldiers in the bombing of a booby-trapped building in the Shaboura refugee camp in Rafah.

A military correspondent for the Times of Israel newspaper said seven soldiers were wounded in the blast, including five seriously.

This brings to 298 the number of Israeli military personnel killed since ground operations began in Gaza on October 27, according to the Israeli army.
