The Turkish Hürriyet newspaper said that Washington gave Ankara, for the first time, a message that it’s ready to discuss the Syrian issue strategically.

Hürriyet added in a report on Tuesday that the meetings between Türkiye and the United States regarding Syria in the coming days, shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Hürriyet pointed out that the “problematic files” between the United States and Türkiye are still on the table between the two countries, but they have diminished after the resolution of two issues, namely Sweden’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the sale of F-16 aircraft to Türkiye, which will lead to “A new political climate” between the two sides.

Hürriyet pointed out that among the remaining problems is the issue of US cooperation with the Kurdish “People’s Protection Units,” the backbone of the SDF forces in northern and eastern Syria.

According to the newspaper, Türkiye wants the United States to adhere to the 2019 agreement, which stipulates moving the Kurdish units 30 kilometers away from the Syrian-Turkish border, stopping support for the Kurds and giving them an opportunity to establish a state.

Hürriyet newspaper confirmed that the US confirmed during the discussions that they are against the establishment of a Kurdish state in Syria, but despite this, there is still a need for a concrete step to address these concerns.
