Germany intends to revive the political dialogue between the European Union and Türkiye and discuss ways of cooperation in various fields with Ankara, after the re-election of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The European Union summit, that took place in Brussels last Thursday, focused on the Ukraine and immigration issues.
The summit also discussed, according to sources the European-Turkish relations and efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus issue.
According to the same sources, Germany requested during the summit to launch a new assessment process for Türkiye, and to assign the European Commission and the Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to prepare new proposals on cooperation options with Türkiye and present them to the leaders.
The sources confirmed that relations with Türkiye are of importance to Germany, as Türkiye was and will remain an important geostrategic partner, especially on the trade and security level and in immigration policies.
There is an opportunity to revive the UN-led process on the Cyprus issue after the elections in Türkiye, Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration.
Cyprus issue would be included in the final declaration of the Council of Europe.
Germany will reintroduce European-Turkish relations after the recent elections in Türkiye, and steps that would revive relations between the two sides will be supported if all concerned parties show political will on this issue.
Türkiye is located in a very important region next to Syria, Iran, Iraq and Armenia, and it will be necessary to conduct a high-level and close dialogue with Türkiye, not only at the bilateral level, but also at the European level, according to the European source.
