Former US intelligence analyst: Europe is on the brink of collapse and is prepared for desperate measures
Former CIA analyst Laurie Johnson said that the European continent is experiencing a severe economic downturn, noting that this deterioration is pushing some countries to consider taking desperate measures, but that their time is over, he said.
Speaking to Russia’s TASS news agency, Johnson explained that Europe is experiencing a collapse in its economic and industrial foundations.
Its economies are no longer as efficient as they once were, and they no longer possess the resources that once distinguished them.
He added, “When nations reach this type of crisis, they often act out of desperation and make hasty and dangerous decisions”.
Commenting on the possibility that some European countries might seek to escalate the conflict in Ukraine even after the upcoming summit between Russian and US leaders in Budapest, Johnson emphasized that such attempts would be unsuccessful, given the growing divisions within the European Union itself.
He pointed to the positions of leaders of several European countries, such as Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orbán, as well as the shift in the Czech Republic’s position, saying that these countries’ enthusiasm for supporting the policies adopted by Germany, France, and Britain has clearly declined.
Johnson also noted that the Sharm el Sheikh Peace Summit revealed the significant gap in economic growth rates between BRICS and European countries, explaining that most European economies are experiencing growth rates of no more than 1.5 to 2%, while countries like Indonesia within the BRICS group are experiencing growth rates of over 4%.
He added that the world today is witnessing the rise of the “Global South” as a rising economic power led by the BRICS countries, emphasizing that this bloc has a promising future compared to Europe, which is facing continued decline.
Johnson concluded by saying, “It seems that the course of history has already been set, and we are entering a new era led by the Global South, with Russia and China in leadership positions within the BRICS system that is shaping the contours of the coming global economic order”.
