Democrats in the US Senate support a two-state solution
A large majority of Democrats in the US Senate supported a statement reaffirming US support for the two-state solution as a means to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
49 out of a total of 51 Democratic senators voted in favor of an amendment that supports a negotiated solution to the conflict that leads to the establishment of two Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side, ensures the survival of Israel as a Jewish, democratic, and secure state, and fulfills the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish their state.
Senator Brian Schatz presented this amendment as part of a draft law related to providing security assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
Schatz stressed in a press conference that the future of Israel and Palestine depends on the existence of hope, and that the two-state solution must be this hope.
This comes in the context of escalating tensions in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his rejection of the establishment of any Palestinian state that doesn’t guarantee Israel’s security.
This rejection caused international concern, including in the United States, the main supporter of Israel.
