A Chinese special diplomatic envoy held talks with Ukrainian officials in Kiev, in the first visit by a prominent Chinese diplomat to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday that Envoy Li Hui had spoken with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on “principles for achieving a just and lasting peace”.

Kuleba stressed that Ukraine “doesn’t accept any proposals referring to the loss of territory or the cessation of the conflict”.

Ukraine calls for the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from its territory as a prerequisite for entering into negotiations.

Kuleba and Li also discussed the bilateral relations between China and Ukraine.

The Chinese special diplomatic envoy Lee Hui is expected to visit Moscow.

According to the Chinese government, the envoy will also visit Poland, Germany and France for talks on a political solution to the conflict.

Since the beginning of the war, Beijing has confirmed more than once its commitment to negotiations, but China has remained a strong supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin in general, which has exposed it to international criticism.
