The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Tuesday that the Israeli war on Gaza had exposed the cities of the Gaza Strip to greater destruction than the cities of Germany were exposed to during World War II.

This came during a speech delivered by Borrell at a plenary session of the European Parliament in the French city of Strasbourg.

Referring to the fact that the victims of the Israeli war on Gaza exceeded 110,000, Borrell said, “We can say that more than 60% of the physical infrastructure in Gaza was damaged, of which 35% was completely destroyed”.

He added, “Gaza cities were destroyed more than German cities in World War II”.

Borrell also referred to “the killing of 249 humanitarian workers and about 100 journalists in the Israeli attacks on Gaza”.

The European official said, “Israel must respect international law, implement the interim measures of the International Court of Justice, and ensure the protection of all civilians”.

In response to a case filed by South Africa on December 29, 2023 against Israel, the International Court of Justice, on January 26, 2024, ordered Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians, and to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

On March 28, International Justice, in response to a second request from South Africa, issued a decision with new temporary measures demanding that Israel take all necessary and effective measures without delay to ensure the provision of the necessary humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Regarding the possible Israeli attack on the city of Rafah, which is home to 1.4 million displaced Palestinians, Borrell said that this would lead to catastrophic consequences.

Borrell added, “It’s important that Israel comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2728, which demands full access for humanitarian aid to Gaza”.
