A major Russian offensive targets energy infrastructure in several regions of Ukraine
Russia launched a large-scale attack on Friday night targeting the country’s energy infrastructure, causing power outages in several areas, Ukraine’s energy minister said.
Svitlana Grynchuk wrote on Facebook: “The enemy is once again launching a major attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure… For this reason, power was cut off in a number of areas”.
She added that the current will return after the situation in the energy system has stabilized, stressing that despite the enemy’s plans, Ukraine will get light and warmth this winter.
Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s main electricity and heating networks since it invaded the country four years ago, destroying much of it.
Moscow has escalated its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent months and damaged natural gas facilities, the main fuel for heating.
Experts have warned that Ukraine could face a heating crisis in the winter.
Oleg Kiper, the governor of Ukraine’s southern Odessa region, reported in a post on Telegram that a drone attack on energy facilities in the region late Friday evening.
“There was damage to an energy infrastructure facility,” he said, adding that there were no deaths or injuries.
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries in a bid to cut off Russian energy exports and cause fuel shortages across the country.
