US State Department: Gas pipeline from Russia to Germany gives the West a pressure card on Putin

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to transport Russian gas to Germany gives Western allies a leverage over Russia because Russian President Vladimir Putin has an interest in the flow of gas.

“It is extremely unlikely or difficult to see this happen if Russia renews its aggression against Ukraine,” Blinken said on Sunday in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press”.

The United States is pressing the Berlin government to stop Nord Stream 2, which is awaiting ratification from Germany, if Russia invades Ukraine, informed sources said last week.

“In fact, it is a source of pressure on Russia because President Putin would like to see gas flowing through the gas pipeline,” Blinken added.
