Israel said on Thursday that it is working to develop a new ballistic missile shield (Arrow-4) in cooperation with the United States, a new level of defense system it has built with a special focus on Iran.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries Company will be the main contractor to develop the Arrow-4 system.
The Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 missile systems already operate within a multi-level system aimed at intercepting and destroying incoming missiles in airspace and space.
“The development of the Arrow-4 with our US partners will lead to a technical and field leap, preparing us for the future battlefield and the threats that arise in the Middle East and beyond,” Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in a statement.
Israeli leaders described Iran’s ballistic missile program as a threat to Israel and the world.
Iran says it is developing the missiles for defensive purposes and to deter attacks.
